Parents of ADHD Toddlers, Preschoolers
medicating a 5 year old??
Hi. I’m new here. I have 3 kids ages 1,5, and 11. My 11 year old was dx’d with ADHD when he was 6. Now my 5 year old is acting just like him but our pedi said there’s no rush to get her diagnosed because shes too young for meed. She bounces off the walls all day long. She talks constantly. Shes loud and cant get in charge of her library voice. She doesn’t listen and makes tons of messes because she skips through so many activities so quickly. You cant take her to town with you because she is constantly running off or putting her hands all over everything. Shes in Pres K and her teacher is reporting the same things I’m seeing. Does she sound like ADHD to you guys or just really misbehaved?

With a family history of ADHD it certainly cannot hurt to have her evaluated by a Developmental Pediatrician. Follow your gut on this one and have your child evaluated regardless of what your regular ped says. My son is 4 1/2, diagnosed with ADHD (and SPD) shortly after turning 4, and we have come to the conclusion that he simply cannot be successful in a classroom without his meds. Even on them he’s had difficulty and we are about to increase the dose. Adderall is the only med approved for children under the age of 6 and that’s what my son takes. Best of luck to you!
Thanks for the response. Does your son actually swallow the Adderall or does it come in something other than pill form?
Also, I have bipolar disorder and it seems some studies show that bipolar parents can cause ADHD kids.
He takes a pill. I’m not sure if it comes in an alternate form.
We saw the psychologist today and he says that DD is ADHD. Now we have to make an appt with the pediatrician to start her on some meds. I hope we find one that works and quickly!
